Special Operations (SO) in Germany and Austria

24 Jan 1949

A file of correspondence and memoranda discussing a Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) proposal for the creation of ‘stay-behind’ underground resistance organisations in Germany and Austria, to be activated in the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Subjects discussed in the documents include the need to start work as soon as possible, due to the amount of time needed to properly organise the scheme; the recruitment of suitable members; objections to the scheme, for political and security reasons; and the eventual decision of the British cabinet not to authorise the scheme.
