British Embassy Belgrade: Double Agent Case 'Expedition'

27 Apr 1948

A file of correspondence and memoranda concerning an attempt to run a double agent via the British embassy in Belgrade. The documents describe a Yugoslav approach to a chancery clerk with access to the diplomatic bag, who reacted encouragingly before reporting this contact to his superiors. It was then arranged for him to pass false information to the Yugoslavs, and it was hoped that this might be the foundation for a long-running deception operation. The rest of the file is devoted to correspondence discussing the reassignment of Doyle to another position for security reasons, Yugoslav obstruction of British diplomatic mail, and the eventual failure of the attempt to further exploit the double agent, after the Yugoslavs failed to make contact again.
