A file of letters and memoranda from the papers of Sir Vincent Caillard, Financial Director of Vickers Ltd, recording the activities of the arms dealer Basil Zaharoff on behalf of Britain. Documents include instructions from the British government for Zaharoff; a letter about Zaharoff’s endowment of a British university chair; letters giving further details of a possible separate peace deal with Turkey, to include the opening of the Dardanelles and withdrawal of Turkish troops from Palestine; a report by Zaharoff of a journey to Switzerland for unsuccessful final negotiations with representatives of Enver Pasha over the Turkish deal, at which the money paid to Enver was partially returned; a letter mentioning information received about German submarines in Vladivostok; a report from the same source of German military involvement in Asia and letters from Zaharoff commenting on the progress of the war and American intervention.
