3 which I would state my case. You must excuse my urgency; but, in this matter, time is of the utmost importance. I have got to return to America on the 11th of the coming month and the intervening time will scarcely suffice to complete the investigations I am now engaged in, including as they do, the Palmerston papers and the Gladstone papers. It is, of course, understood and explicitly agreed, that my access to the Granville papers should be on exactly the same terms upon which you granted my request to have access to the Archives of the Foreign Office.
