Description

A file of documents on Rudolf Hess' imprisonment in Britain in 1945. The documents include Hess' personal correspondence with his family, covering life in Germany and casualties of the final months of the war, and letters written by Hess to the Swiss minister in London in which he complains of a British decision to begin force feeding him after he had gone on hunger strike, and notifying the minister of his intention to commit suicide. The file also contains reports discussing Hess' worsening mental health, concerns that he was a suicide risk, means to prevent the press learning that Hess had been treated as a psychiatric patient, and the beginning of the Nuremberg trials.
