File Accession Date 5 June 1992

Description

A file of minutes of interrogations of Rudolf Hess, and subsequent reports and correspondence concerning their content, in the month following Hess' arrival in Scotland on the 10th of May 1941. These discussions cover various subjects including the aftermath of the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic, and the threat posed by German U-boats to British shipping; German war aims; and German support for the anti-British revolt in Iraq. The focal point of the file is Hess' unauthorised peace offer to the British government, according to which Britain would be allowed to keep her colonial empire - apart from the former German colonies and Iraq, which Hess believed Hitler would be unwilling to leave "in the lurch" - but would acquiesce to German domination of continental Europe.
