Summary of Inter-Service Intelligence Prepared up to 4.0 p.m. 1st January, 1942

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Amongst the subjects discussed in this file are military situation reports detailing German and Soviet military operations on the Eastern Front; the progress of the sieges of Malta and Leningrad; naval warfare and Japanese offensives in the Pacific; the German war effort, including shortages of labour and raw materials, and the production of weapons and aircraft; international trade, and German relations with neutral countries; Italian and Japanese naval losses; German naval dispositions; and the activities of the French navy under the control of the Vichy regime.
