The General Military Situation in Europe with Particular Reference to a Possible Threat to Turkey. Report

1 Nov 1946

ANNEX General There are no significant changes to report in the overall Russian troop and air strengths in Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Albania. EVIDENCE OF RUSSIAN TROOP MOVEMENTS IN ROUMANIA AND BULGARIA 2. We now assess that there is a maximum of 275,000 Russian troops in Roumania. 3. The situation regarding Russian forces in Bulgaria has now clarified. Our previous suggestion that a newly arrived mechanised corps might be the forerunner of a whole mechanised Army in the process of moving from Roumania to Bulgaria, was almost certainly incorrect.
