German Preparations for Invasion in 1940 - Parliamentary Question. Report

1 Nov 1946

ANNEX GERMAN PREPARATIONS FOR INVASION IN 1940 In response to a question asked in this House on 6th May by the honourable and gallant Member for Stockport*, a statement has now been prepared regarding the attempted invasion of this country by Germany in 1940. The statement, which is based on captured German documents and the interrogation of German Prisoners of War, is given in the following paragraphs. 2. In July, 1940, Hitler was faced with the first major unexpected check to his strategy. He had outrun his immediate plans and was confronted with the problem of eliminating Britain, in order to avoid a long drawn-out struggle, with the consequent danger that, if the time came for his final reckoning with Soviet Russia, Germany would be involved in a war on two fronts.
