The General Military Situation in Europe with Particular Reference to a Possible Threat to Turkey. Report

1 Nov 1946

ANNEX Introduction We examine below the military situation in Europe with a view to assessing the Russian capacity for a successful attack in any area. In view of recent Russian troop movements and other activities in South-East Europe, particular attention has been paid to the situation in Bulgaria, in order that the possible threat to Turkey may be given full consideration. We also assess the likelihood of a Russian attack on Turkey. General 2. An examination of the strength and dispositions of Russian Forces given in the attached Appendix "A" shows that Russian troops are numerically superior in all areas of Europe to the Combined Anglo-U.S.-French forces which may face them in those areas.
