H.A. CACCIA G.W.R. TEMPLER R.H. QUILL ( for D.N.I.) R.E. VINTRAS (for A.C.A.S. (I)) Part III. Russian Strategic Intentions in the Middle East by Areas (i) Turkey The Soviet Union's long term objectives are the establishment of a Turkish Government subservient to her interests, the dissolution of the AngloTurkish alliance, the revision of the status of the Straits, and the acquisition of a Soviet base there. She will appreciate that her aims wall be assisted by the growing military isolation of Turkey which will result from the withdrawal of British troops from Greece, from any weakening of the British position in the Middle East consequent on the loss of the Egyptian base, and from the extension of Soviet influence throughout the area.
