Russian Troop Movements in Eastern and South-East Europe and on Persian Frontier. Report

1 Apr 1946

ANNEX EASTERN AND SOUTH-EAST EUROPE Military Dispositions Germany The most important development is the recent arrival in Germany of considerable Russian forces from the South. These consist of two Guards Tank Armies, one of which has arrived in the Luckenwalde area of Brandenburg, one Corps of a Guards Army and an Artillery Division. As a result, we estimate that the total Russian garrison in Germany has increased from 525,000 to about 605,000 since early June. Although this does not raise the total of Russian forces in Germany to the level of January, 1946 (900,000) it does however, more than offset the results of demobilisation during the last 2 months, and restores Russian strength in the area to approximately what it was in early April, 1946.
