A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects covered in this file include publicity for the effects of the atomic bombing of Japan; plans for Palestinian autonomy; Soviet troop movements in Europe; Soviet involvement in Iran; Soviet and British recruitment of German scientists; Yugoslav territorial claims on Trieste; Soviet strategic intentions in East Asia; the strength of communist movements worldwide; evidence of Soviet contravention of the Potsdam Agreement; and the contribution of oil shortages to the German defeat in 1945.
