Military Situation in Franco-Spaninsh Frontier

1 Jan 1946

5. In the Spanish Army as a whole, small arms and light artillery pieces are of good quality, well maintained and in sufficient numbers. It is worth noting that Spain purchased about sixty dual purpose 88 mm guns from Germany in 1943/44. Heavier artillery weapons are, in general, of ancient design and no match for modern weapons. It is doubtful whether the Spanish Army possesses more than three hundred tanks, varying from 4½ to 10 tons; no heavy tanks are known to exist. Its motor transport is very much depleted owing to bad maintenance and shortage of spares, and especially of tyres.
