DRAFT SECRET CYPHER TELEGRAM FROM: CABINET OFFICES To: L.H.Q., MELBOURNE March, 1946. For Australian Chiefs of Staff from British Chiefs of Staff. We should like to express our sincere thanks to you and the other authorities concerned in Australia for the cordial reception accorded to our Mission consisting of Air Vice Marshal L.F. Pendred and Captain A. Hillgarth, R.N., which recently visited Australia to discuss the proposed establishment of a Joint Intelligence Bureau in Australia. 2. We look forward to receiving official notification of the views of the Australian Government on the proposals and hope that we may be informed in the near future of the name of the Director Designate of the Joint Intelligence Bureau in Australia, in the event of Australian approval to these proposals, in order that discussions might commence at an early date with the Director of the Joint Intelligence Bureau in the U.K.
