Reactions to Malayan Union (SAC(46)19)

1 Jan 1946

(a) The Sultan of PERAK protests that the White Paper, instead of safeguarding the status and dignity of the Rulers, completely deprives them of their sovereignty, including control over religious affairs. (b) The Sultan of KEDAH protests that he and his State Council had no alternative but to sign the new agreement. Either he had to sign or not be recognised as Sultan by H.M.G. This he regards as duress. (c) The Sultan of KELANTAN states that the contents of the White Paper are not the contents which he signed.
