Implications of Recently Reported Russian Activities in South East Europe

1 Jan 1946

HUNGARY 5. We estimate the present garrison of Russian troops at about 270,000 This figure represents a reduction of about 275,000 troops since the 1st December, 1945, which may largely be accounted for by the repatriation of forces to Russia; some of these are reported to have been travelling home by the Trans-Carpathian route and others through Roumania. On the other hand, we have no firm information of any Russian demobilization since the end of 1945, and it is possible therefore that large numbers of the troops from Hungary may have been moved to the Balkans, particularly to Roumania and Bulgaria.
