Defences in the Eastern Mediterranean Note by the Secretary

ANNEX DBC 17 SECRETARY, J.I.C. As a result of the Future Policy for the Defence of Bases,* the Defence of Bases Committee reported+ on the restoration of the defences of the Eastern Mediterranean to full efficiency on the assumption that the period of notice would not exceed six months and might be less. 2. The defences at the following bases were involved: CYPRUS, HAIFA, PORT SAID, ALEXANDRIA, CAIRO, together with the SUEZ CANAL AREA and the twelve airfields in Egypt. 3. The Chiefs of Staff consideredthis report by the Defence of Bases Committee and after discussion reduced the period of notice to four months and agreed to review the problem in November, 1945.
