Japanese Resistance in S.W.P.A. Note by the Secretary, Covering Reply to the Joint Planning Staff

1 Jul 1945

J.I.C./1064/45. ANNEX The Secretary, Joint Planning Staff. With reference to your minute 45/500 dated 27th July, 1945, the cements of the J.I.C. on paragraph 8 of Australian (Govt.) telegram No. 197 are as follows:2. We have no complete and up-to-date estimate of Japanese strength in the islands between the Celebes and New Guinea. The estimate given in the Australian (Govt.) telegram No. 197 of 70,000 men should be reasonably accurate. 5. The only offensive threat from these forces in S.W.P.A. appears to be towards Morotai where the Japanese are known to have carried out infiltration tactics from Halmahera where they have about 52,000 men.
