Conditions in Japan-Summary for December 1944. Note by Secretary (Prepared by F.O.)

1 Jan 1945

Unfortunately we have no indication as to the psychological effect of the earthquake. It is not unreasonable to suppose that its coincidence with the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Great Britain and the United States may have led certain sections of the Japanese population to attribute it to divine intervention in our favour. The Japanese are a superstitious people and have a tendency to associate natural calamities with political events. Any outbreak of hysteria or panic would of course have been rigorously suppressed and therefore the lack of evidence of popular disturbance does not necessarily mean that no disturbance took place.
