Bombing of Berlin Note by Secretary

1 Jan 1945

ANNEX EXTRACT FROM AIR STAFF PAPER DATED 22ND JULY, 1944 "Berlin. The operational advantage of selecting Berlin as a target is that in view of its large size, attack is relatively free from restriction by weather conditions; the attack may be sustained over periods of bad weather by the use of blind bombing devices. It would thus be possible to arrange a heavy attack on Berlin at short notice and to maintain it for a number of consecutive days in all but the very worst weather conditions. From the beginning of August, when Bomber Command can reach Berlin at night, it should be possible to drop 20,000 tons on that city in 4 days and 3 nights.
