If staunchly defended, these mountains would make an advance from France extremely difficult, and even if penetrated, would make it possible for the Swiss to continue harassing L. of C. with guerilla tactics. The following are the main road and rail routes across the frontier:(a) Bellegarde to Geneva (b) Morez to Nyon (narrow guage) (c) Pontarlier to Lausanne (d) Pontarlier to Neuchatel (e) Belfort to Delemont (f) through Basel.
