A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the collapse of the German war effort; Japanese military strength and strategy; the military situation on the Eastern Front, in Italy, and on the Western Front; the start of the Battle of the Bulge, including prior predictions that such an attack was unlikely; conditions within Japan; German attempts to prevent the escape of prisoners of war; the aftermath of Allied operations in the Low Countries; and the sharing of weapons information with the Soviets.
