Probable Situation in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations When Germany Collapses Note by Sec.

1 Aug 1944

JOINT INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE (ALLIED FORCE) Probable Situation in M.T.O. when GERMANY Collapses Section I MILITARY 1. AUSTRIA. The behaviour of the German Army, once it is convinced that organised military resistance has ceased, will depend largely on its geographical position at the time, and on the attitude and authority of local military commanders. Since the overwhelming desire of the ordinary soldier will be to return to his family and home, those units which escape being surrounded by and forced to surrender to the Allies will try to escape individually or in groups.
