Scale of Attack on the Falkland Islands. Note by the Secretary

1 Aug 1944

MR. SABBEN-CLARE agreed with the above view and said that certain recent provocative action in South Georgia had been suspected of the Argentine, and that the Colonial Office therefore supported the suggestion that British troops should remain at least until there had been a fresh appreciation by the Joint intelligence Sub-Committee of the risk involved in their withdrawal. After further discussion THE COMMITTEE:Instructed the Secretary to request the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee to provide a fresh appreciation of the possibility of an attack on the Falkland Islands by the Argentine and, on receipt of this appreciation, to write to the Foreign Office requesting a reconsideration of their View of this matter in the light of the latest appreciation of the risk involved.
