Capabilities of the German Air Force in the Defence of the Reich

1 Aug 1944

ANNEX DRAFT TELEGRAM Assumption I We think it improbable that by 1st October all G.A.F. Units will have been withdrawn from Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia and Hungary. Summary and Conclusions, General We think the operational strength of the G.A.F. on 1st October will be between 4,500 and 4,750 and that nonoperational units will comprise about a further 500 aircraft. We think that "the G.A.F. sporadic scales effort in considerable force" may amount to an effort of between 300 and 400 fighter sorties per day sustained for a period of two or three days.
