ANNEX SECRET 44/407 Secretary, Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee. Operations in China The strategical Planning Section would be very grateful for answers to the following:1. Assuming that Japanese succeed in reopening HankowCanton railway as envisaged in J.I.C. (44) 266 (0) what force could the Japanese maintain in the Hongkong-Canton area assuming sea route cut 'by occupation of Formosa? 2. What would be Japanese and Chinese reaction to capture of Hongkong-Canton from. sea? The object or this enquiry is to find whether we should be able to open a land supply route to China and what sort of a continuing commitment we should have in Hongkong-Canton area.
