1 Apr 1944

FOCSANI and GALATZ and eastwards along the Danube to the Black Sea. Between FOCSANI and GALATZ lies the GALATZ GAP, some 60 miles of open country with little or no natural defences. If the Russians penetrate this gap the line of the Carpathians will be turned. The Russians have now advanced to within about 100 miles of this gap, which in turn is little over 100 miles from the vital areas of BUCHAREST and PLOESTI. IMMEDIATE FUTURE 6. The German forces retreating over the DNIESTER will be having difficulty in evacuating their heavy equipment.
