German Strategy in South-East Europe Report by J.I.C.

1 Apr 1944

ANNEX GERMAN STRATEGY IN SOUTH-EAST EUROPE Introduction The whole German position on the Eastern Front depends on holding the sector between the Pripet Marshes and the Northern Carpathians. A Russian breakthrough in this sector, involving the capture of Przemysl, would cut the whole Eastern Front in two, and its exploitation would bring the Russians to the frontiers of Germany itself. 2. If the Germans failed to hold the Russians at least as far East as the Vistula and the Sun, the situation in South-East Europe would become of secondary importance.
