APPENDIX [J.P.(44) 104 (S) (T. of R.)] [14TH APRIL, 1944] THE OCCUPATION OF BORNEO Note by the Secretary In the course of their discussion at this morning's meeting+ on a report by the Joint Planning Staff* on the alternative proposal for the war against Japan, the Chiefs of Staff instructed the Joint Planning Staff to prepare a report on the advantages to be obtained by our occupation of bases in Borneo and of the courses of action that would be open to us after the capture of such bases. 2. Upon the alternative assumptions (a) that the American advance in the Pacific proceeds on the present planned timetable; or (b) that that timetable is retarded by 6 months, the Strategical Planning Section are invited to prepare a draft report.
