Domination of the Dalmatian Coast. Report by J.I.C.

1 Jan 1944

German Intentions 7. The Germans' main concern is to keep their divisions based on the coast of Yugoslavia regularly supplied and to prevent either an increase in Partisan activities or an Allied assault on the mainland. As regards the former, it is impossible to say to what extent the German forces on the Dalmatian coast are supplied by sea. Many of the railways by which these forces could be supplied are continually cut and road communication is often insecure. The very fact that the Germans expended so much effort in laboriously retaking Island after Island confirms that their sea communications in this area are of the very first importance.
