Estimate of Scale and Probability of Enemy Sabotage Operations in the Mediterranean. Appreciation by J.I.C. (A.F.). Note by Sec. Covering J.I.C.(A.F.) 21

1 Jan 1944

Italian sources also hold this view. The most likely targets, at present, are the Allied held ports in Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia. It is possible that Naples, Bari, Brindisi or Maddelena might be selected as targets. If, however, the enemy is able to repair the ex-Italian carrier submarines, he could carry out attacks anywhere in the Mediterranean. Warning from photo reconnaissance might be expected, but this is by no means certain. (d) Italian Participation It must be expected that the Republican Italians will take part in operations.
