avoid being outflanked, to withdraw from the Leningrad sector to the line Lake Peipus Kskov Polotsk high ground west of Orsha Bonruisk Pripet Marshes. This advance would give the Russians the important lateral railway from Leningrad to Mogilev and would not materially lengthen their lines of communication. The Germans might, therefore, soon find themselves driven to the next line which offers a series of good defensive positions, namely Riga Dvinsk high ground Minsk Pripet Marshes.
