Scale of Air Attack in the East Africa Command Report by J.I.C.

1 Oct 1943

4. With the Russians on the Kerch Straits and in Zaporozhe and Melitopol, thus cutting the Zaporozhe-Crimea railway, the whole German position in the Crimea is threatened. Withdrawals of the main G.A.F. headquarters and of German naval and sea transport organizations to the Nikolaev and Odessa areas, which were prepared in mid-September, support the view that the Germans have for some time recognised that an evacuation of the Crimea may be forced upon them. Such an evacuation would have to be carried out mainly by sea.
