1. Shipping routes within range (See Map A) (i) Trade (a) Shipping from Palembang. Oil shipments from Palembang customarily go first to Singapore before proceeding further afield. The depth of water in Palembang river is limited and either small tankers are used to take the oil to Singapore, where it is subsequently transhipped to larger tankers, or tankers are only part loaded at Palembang and top up at Singapore. These oil shipments are most important and are expected to account for some 25% of the Japanese black oil requirements.
