Effect of Recent Operations in Russia on German Strength in Italy. Note by Secretary

1 Oct 1943

ANNEX AWL894PK PERSONAL STRONG FROM D.M.I. Your GAD/PK 443 of 30 September. Our 74655 dated 1st October crossed your PK/443 and therefore assume you need no further comment on your (A). Present position is that events are slowing down in Russia and Russian G.S. do not anticipate being able to force Dnieper Line at present if only through their own administrative difficulties after three months' fighting. With regard to your (B) we still adhere to views in JIC (43) 324. While Germans undoubtedly preparing an "ostwall" position there are no indications of an present intention to go back to it.
