Attack on Portugal. Report by J.I.C.

1 Aug 1943

5. German Air Forces The German air forces are fighting in three theatres of war against greatly superior forces and this disparity of strength is steadily increasing. In order to protect Germany against Allied bombing attacks the air forces on the Russian front and in the Mediterranean have had to be so weakened that inadequacy of air support is already an important factor contributing to the reverses that the German army is now suffering. In these circumstances we are convinced that the Germans could not find the air forces necessary to support a land attack against Portugal.
