German Strategy in Italy in the Event of an Italian Collapse. Note by Secretary

b. Disadvantages. (1) The total occupation of ITALY would probably be necessary since it is most likely that the Italians would resent the use of their country as a battle field. (2) The defence of Southern ITALY in strength, the occupation of ITALY and the protection of long lines of communication would necessitate the employment of some 15 20 divisions. The lines of communication, unless German controlled, would be extremely vulnerable. (3) Defence in southern ITALY permits a series of outflanking sea-borne attacks to be made by the Allies.
