Sumatra - Malaya. Report by J.I.C.

1 Jul 1943

"1(e) The Allies have captured the Marshalls and Carolines" (i) We consider that the capture of Truk will be, in effect, a turning point of the war against Japan and her military and air dispositions thereafter will be dictated by the naval strategy which the capture of Truk will impose upon her. (ii) The Japanese Fleet may either fight in the defence of Truk and be, in greater or less degree, destroyed in the process, or it may abandon Truk in order to survive as a "Fleet in being" and fight in defence of Metropolitan Japan.
