closing the Straits of Gibraltar to the Allies as a first step towards rendering the whole Allied position in the Mediterranean untenable. (b) If the Allies invaded Spain to forestall the Germans In these circumstances the reactions would be as follows:(i) Spanish and Portuguese Reaction The Spanish Government, particularly if the Franco Regime was still in power, would resist the Allies and appeal for German assistance. The Portuguese Government, though reluctant to be drawn into the war at this stage, would probably feel bound to accede to Allied demands if backed by force.
