A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include Allied landings in Italy, the possibility of an Italian collapse and armistice, and the German reaction; the blockading of vital German resources; the Axis oil position; the effects of bombing raids on Germany; security measures for prisoners of war and the domestic press; the Soviet attitude to the Polish resistance movement; potential Axis and Allied attacks on Spain; the possibility of a German withdrawal from Norway and the Balkans; the possibility of a separate German peace with the Soviet Union; and Japanese strategy.
