5. Production began in December 1940 with an output of 50 tons of ore a day. By January 1941 daily output had risen to 240 tons of ore and it is believed that during 1941 some 50,000 tons of ore, containing 1,500 tons of nickel, were transported from Kolosjoki, mainly to Germany. 4. Production has encountered serious difficulties at various stages. In 1941, before the smelter at the mine was completed the ore was sent by road to Tromso for treatment elsewhere. This was found to be impracticable and shipments had to be abandoned until such time as the smelter was ready to treat the ore and only the extracted nickel need be shipped.
