The Use of Infra-Red Devices. Report by J.I.C.

1 May 1943

In later conversations, prisoner amplified his statement by saying that although infra-red detection of aircraft exhausts had been abandoned, infra-red searchlights and detective equipment had been experimentally applied to tanks. The detective equipment, which appeared to be a variety of the "Spanner" infra-red apparatus previously intended for aircraft was an electron telescope. He further said that if tanks were fitted with the necessary infra-red searchlight they would be immediately betrayed if the opposing side possessed an electron telescope or similar device.
