German Reinforcements for "Husky". Note by Secy.

1 Mar 1943

(a) The German assessment of the chances that Italy can be kept in the war; (b) The likelihood that "Horrified" will be our objective; (c) Size and fighting value of any forces evacuated to "Horrified" from Tunisia. (d) The German assessment of what is required for a secure defence of "Horrified". 3. The likelihood that "Horrified" will be one of our first objectives stood high in the German mind two months ago and probably still stands high despite German reinforcement of the Balkans. 4. If the Germans succeed in evacuating from Tunisia troops to the equivalent of, say, one division and have taken the precaution of providing weapons and equipment in advance, they may consider that this addition to the garrison of "Horrified" will be sufficient to ensure its defence.
