Operations Subsequent to "Husky". Report by J.I.C.

1 Mar 1943

10. We are unable to state categorically. how near Italy would be to collapse as a result of a successful "Husky" but a landing on the mainland of Italy even though very limited in size might well bring about a complete collapse. The morale of the Italian people is already very low. The occupation of Sicily and the threat of intensified air bombing will make it still lower. The only desire of the Italians will be to get out of the war as quickly as possible. Our evidence shows that the Germans are becoming increasingly unpopular in Italy.
