Situation in Tunisia. Note by Secretary

1 Mar 1943

(e) Some Italian aircraft have recently withdrawn from Tunisia to Sicily. These moves, however, are for normal routine operational purposes or for re-fitting. They have no significance as regards evacuation. 4. We conclude that despite the loss of the Mareth position no decision has yet been taken to evacuate Tunisia. On the contrary the planned reinforcement still being carried out indicates an intention to continue to retain a footing in Tunisia as long as possible. (Signed) V. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK E.G.N.
