Possible Developments in the Balkans. Report

1 Mar 1943

ANNEX APPRECIATION A. HUNGARY 1. Present Situation (a) Political Hungary has succeeded in preserving a greater degree of independence than any other satellite in SouthEastern Europe. A relatively strong democratic opposition to the present pro-Axis policy of the Government has emerged, based mainly on the peasant and socialist parties, on the trade union organisation and on a number of intellectuals. There is also a Right Wing opposition, with which Count Bethlen is connected, of Nationalist and antiGerman sympathies.
