Use of Gas by the Enemy During Operation "Husky". Note by the Secretary

1 Jan 1943

2. If gas warfare had previously broken out elsewhere, it would be rash to express the conviction that it would not be used on any particular Front. On balance, however, think unlikely that it would be used in connexion with "HUSKY" in any case. Italians badly prepared for gas warfare. Training and organisation elementary. Troops seldom have respirator drill. Scale of issue respirators to Italian civilians entirely inadequate. Italians therefore would be most averse to gas warfare in connexion with "HUSKY" and Germans would be unlikely to override them.
