A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include changes to German strategy after serious defeats in the Soviet Union; a potential invasion of Sardinia; British strategy in North Africa and the Mediterranean; the Japanese shipping situation; German resource deficits; the scale of a potential air attack on Britain; commando raids on the Channel Islands; the world-wide Axis threat; German infra-red technology; the use of chemical weapons in Sicily; German naval intentions; the employment of aliens by British intelligence agencies; preparations for the invasion of Sicily; and the exchanging of intelligence with the Soviets.
