Sardinia. Note by the Secretary

1 Nov 1942

3. Situation between now and the Assault. So long as the Axis bridgehead in Africa is maintained, the Germans and Italians are likely to appreciate that there is no immediate threat to Sardinia. At present it is believed that the resources available to them are fully taken up with reinforcing and supplying North Africa. The Italians could, however. make reinforcements available by withdrawals from Southern France and also from the Balkans, a move of which reports have been received but of which the nature is not yet apparent.
